2 Thessalonians Introduction

Over the last several weeks, we discussed 1 Thessalonians and recognized that Paul was writing to encourage the believers. He also wrote to correct incorrect views creeping into this new church and to clarify the rapture and the second coming of Jesus Christ. Later, Paul realized he needed to send a second letter to help the Thessalonians continue pursuing a correct view of God’s plan and future actions.

To break this down even further, we can see that in 2 Thessalonians, Paul writes to encourage the church to remain faithful to the teachings of Jesus Christ, to correct incorrect beliefs (such as missing the rapture and thinking they would face God’s wrath), and to exhort the church to take action. This book has three chapters, and each covers different topics. The first offers hope in the increased intensity of persecution. The second chapter offers more clarity on the Day of the Lord, and the third chapter challenges believers who have essentially “thrown in the towel” and given up.

As we prepare for this study, I ask that you read through 2 Thessalonians and ask the Lord to guide you as we venture forward. Ask that He point out any beliefs you hold inaccurately about His second coming. Ask that He guide you in understanding what you can be doing now for the kingdom. This book is needed now more than ever, so we need to study and apply it immediately in our lives. Get ready to study 2 Thessalonians!

Seek the truth and encourage one another,

Alex
